When your child is afraid of something, it’s natural for you to go into “protective mode.” Seeing your child afraid or hurt can be uncomfortable for you and them, so our first instinct is to remove the very thing that is causing the problem, and we assume everything will be better.

What all parents have to worry about is not letting avoidance of normal activities become the pattern for a very important reason: avoidance reinforcement. Ultimately, that can lead to more and more fear responses and a limited life for your child.
